Sustainability
Water transport helps reduce CO2 emissions, but as a port, we are constantly seeking more ways to become even more sustainable. In addition to making waterborne transport easier and more transparent, we are also exploring concrete measures. The Port of Zwolle is currently investigating or lobbying for the following initiatives:
- The potential for alternative fuels, such as hydrogen, wind and solar energy, and LNG.
- The possibilities for generating alternative energy.
- The development of shore-side power facilities to reduce CO2 emissions from inland vessels.
- The widening and deepening of the lock at Kornwerderzand to facilitate more water transport and reduce road transport.
- A battery exchange center, which would make it easier for shipmasters to operate vessels with electric power rather than diesel.
Sustainability is crucial for a prosperous future. We owe it to future generations to protect the planet. Furthermore, sustainability also provides economic value. The Port of Zwolle aims to distinguish itself through sustainable measures and initiatives, making it an attractive location for companies that prioritize sustainability.
Sustainability is important for a good future. We are obligated to future generations to take good care of the Earth.

Why Set Sustainability Goals?
Promoting greater sustainability makes our ports more appealing to companies looking to reduce their environmental impact. Many businesses in the region are focused on sustainability, and the Port of Zwolle is happy to support them in this endeavor. In addition to the economic benefits that sustainability brings to our port area and the wider region, we believe it is our responsibility to protect the environment for future generations.
DUAL Ports
The Port of Zwolle participates in the European Interreg project, DUAL Ports. This project connects ports in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Scotland, and other countries to exchange insights and learn from one another. Each port in the DUAL Ports project has its own strengths and areas of focus but shares a common challenge: reducing CO2 emissions. By sharing knowledge and discussing key issues, the ports work together to support each other on their journey toward greater sustainability.
