European opportunities for the Zwolle Region take centre stage during working visit by Willemien Koning
On 22 May, MEP Willemien Koning paid a working visit to the Zwolle Region. On board the Veerman van Kampen, she held discussions with regional representatives on current challenges relating to water, ports, infrastructure and climate adaptation.
The conversation focused extensively on the strategic and economic position of the Zwolle Region within European transport corridors — a position that offers opportunities for further development and cooperation.
Role of Port of Zwolle within Europe
Part of the discussion concerned the role of Port of Zwolle. Director Jeroen van den Ende outlined the contribution the port, as a logistics link in the region, makes to a strong economic environment and quality of life. Through its connections with inland shipping, road transport and the hinterland, Port of Zwolle plays an important role in sustainable and efficient freight flows.
The conversation also covered future European funding opportunities that could support the further development of infrastructure and logistics in the region, such as the third tranche of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The crucial importance of widening the Kornwerderzand lock for business activity in the Zwolle Region was also emphasised.
A valuable dialogue
The working visit provided a valuable opportunity to bring the challenges and opportunities of the Zwolle Region to attention from a European perspective. With a strong position within European corridors and a clear ambition in the areas of sustainability and accessibility, the Zwolle Region continues to actively pursue collaboration and development for the future.
