Innovation and digitalisation in agri-food logistics

Afbeelding 2

Port of Zwolle is the lead partner of the Interreg NWE project DODILog (Develop Opportunities to Digitalise & Innovate in the Agri-Food value chain’s Logistics). Over the next three years, we will work together with partners from the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany to develop innovative solutions for the storage and logistics of potatoes and cereals – essential staple products in North-West Europe.

Why DODILog?

Potatoes and grains are highly sensitive to spoilage, mould, pests, and quality degradation caused by heat, humidity, or inadequate storage conditions. This results in significant financial and food losses across the supply chain.
DODILog focuses on developing, testing, and implementing smart technologies and digital solutions to extend the shelf life of these crops and reduce losses.

Our Approach

Within DODILog, advanced non-destructive detection and monitoring methods will be tested and applied in real-life settings such as silos, warehouses, and containers. Examples include:

  • Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) for insect detection.
  • Sub-THz sensors and multi-gas eNose for quality monitoring.
  • Smart chips and sensor technologies for real-time temperature and humidity tracking.
  • AI-driven control systems for ventilation and storage management.

In addition to technology development, DODILog invests in training, knowledge sharing, and strategy development to ensure the innovations are widely applicable and scalable across the sector.

Collaboration in Northwest Europe

DODILog is a cross-border cooperation project involving 11 partners from four countries. As lead partner, Port of Zwolle plays a central role in:

  • Project management and coordination.
  • Testing technologies in collaboration with local companies such as Graansloot Kampen.
  • Organising webinars and workshops for agri-food businesses.
  • Disseminating knowledge and innovations to other ports and logistics hubs.

Impact

Through DODILog, we strengthen the agri-food value chain by:

  • Reducing food losses and improving the quality of potatoes and grains.
  • Ensuring sustainable and efficient use of energy and resources in storage.
  • Creating new business models for the sector.
  • Building a more resilient and innovative logistics system in Northwest Europe.

Project Results

The expected results of DODILog are:

  • Organisations with increased institutional capacity due to their participation in the project cooperation activities 60 across borders.
  • 7 Solutions taken up/upscaled.
  • 60 participants attending 3 joint training sessions.
  • 1 Joint strategy.

Key Facts

The DODILog project will run for a period of three years, starting on 1 January 2025 and ending on 31 December 2027. The total project budget amounts to € 5,5 million. To maximise impact, DODILog brings together a strong network of partners, all working together to strengthen innovation in the agri-food logistics sector. The consortium partners are:
